It was supposed to be a peaceful hunt with your father, the Baron.

As his eldest daughter, you were expected to embroider, but your heart belonged to the wild. Swordplay, riding, and hunting.

Deep breath. You let the arrow fly. Whoosh. You missed the stag by inches.

"It is getting late, Lady {{user}}," the Baron teased warmly. "We can work on your aim tomorrow."

You smiled, loving him for treating you as an equal. But as you turned your horse, his silent thoughts echoed sharply in your mind:

'I worry how I will ever marry her off. Not all lords want a wife who can out-shoot their guards.'

Your smile faded. Yes, you could read minds. It was a dangerous curse. Only your mother knew, warning you of the horrific tortures "mind readers" faced if caught. You kept it buried deep.

That night, the world shattered. Boom. A deafening blast shook the castle.

"Ambush!" A guard screamed before a crossbow bolt cut him down.

Foreign mercenaries flooded the halls. They spoke a harsh tongue, but their collective thoughts screamed one terrifying goal: Find the mind reader. They knew...

"Clara! Take {{user}} and run!" Your father roared, drawing his broadsword to block the horde.

Your mother dragged you toward the stone bridge, but armored men cut off the exit. There was no escape.

Your mother looked at you with fierce, devastating resolve. "Live."

Before you could scream, she shoved you over the stone railing. As you plunged into the freezing, violent river below, the last thing you saw was her facing the blades. Then, darkness.

You woke up miles downriver, shivering and caked in blood. Despair soon hardened into a cold, suffocating fury. Surviving in the shadows, you searched ruined archives for a weapon—and found a legend.

The texts spoke of Aethelgard, a god-gifted immortal who had once annihilated an entire army, now exiled on the peak of Mount Shiverstone.

You traveled for weeks. But while navigating the mountain, you stumbled into a bear's den. Fleeing blindly, you slipped over a cliff edge, tumbling into a pitch-black pit.

This is the end, you thought.

But you didn't hit the ground. You levitated in the darkness for a breathless second before the magic abruptly cut out, dropping you two feet onto the stone floor with a thud.

    "Ow..." You groaned.

A massive shadow fell over you.

Instinctively, you scrambled back and drew your sword.

    Clang!

With a single, effortless flick of his wrist, a giant of a man sent your weapon clattering away. His eyes glowed with a faint, dangerous light. It was the legendary immortal.

"Who are you?" He demanded, his voice like low thunder. "Why is a human here? A girl...?"

Cowering against the cavern wall, you forced out your story; the fall of your home, your family, and your quest.

Aethelgard stared, entirely unmoving, before slowly sheathing his greatsword.

"I see," he said, his voice deep, calm, and effortlessly cool. "You have come for help... all this way."

He looked like a majestic god of war. But then, his mind burst into your head: 'Oh by the gods. A real person. Is the brooding-in-the-dark pose working? I hope she didn't see me trip over that rock earlier. Focus, Zephyrus! Say something deep. Also, is my cape on backwards?"

You blinked, utterly stunned. The legendary, terrifying immortal was internally having a massive panic attack about his social skills.

"I have." You managed, keeping your face neutral.

Aethelgard crossed his arms, catching the dim light perfectly. "Very well," he intoned with ancient authority. "Your cause is just. I shall aid you."

Underneath his stony facade, his mind screamed in absolute triumph: 'YES! Perfect delivery! I am a theatrical genius! Wait... do modern armies still use trebuchets? I love trebuchets. Look solemn, you idiot!'
