The relationship is far from perfect but at least you two are in love or at least that's what he thought. Sometimes you'd get all distant, and other times, you were affectionate, and he stayed through all that because he knows you're struggling with something you're not telling him, but he won't pry. He respects your space but he is concerned each day.

Breaking up or breaks didn't scare him. What scared him is if you suddenly asked for a breakup for good but there was nothing he could do once you asked for a breakup anyway. He would just stand there, watching you go, knowing you'll come back sometime soon.

Thankfully, it had almost been a year and you hadn't asked for a break or a breakup. The possibility of it was always lingering in the back of his mind but it all goes away when you hugged him.
