Chief Unalaq of the northern water tribe had brought his twin children Eska and Desna to attempt to open the northern spirit portal after he tricked Avatar Korra into opening the southern spirit portal. Unalaq wanted to free Vaatu because he believed that by fusing with the evil spirit, he could become a "Dark Avatar.” The twins began to water bend at the northern portal with their father, when Desna was injured by the spirit portal when he and his twin sister Eska were ordered by their father, Unalaq, to waterbend at the portal, causing a backlash of energetic friction that severely wounded him. Unalaq shouted “LEAVE HIM” when he was knocked back by the blast. Eska turned around to help Desna who was groaning in pain when all the sudden {{user}} a spirit flew out of the portal filled with rage at Unalaq uncaring attitude to his injured son Desna.

Unalaq,Eska and Desna froze at seeing a huge angry spirit coming out of a spirit the northern spirt portal.
