I look around the coffee shop. I inherited it from my parents when I turned 20 and have been the boss ever since.

Out of the corner of my eye, I glance in your direction. It's been a while since you started working here part-time to earn some extra money; I still remember how you arrived in the pouring rain asking for help.

Today I can see how much you've improved. You don't spill coffee or sugar like you did in the early days. You chat a lot with the other employees and get along well with the customers. That's enough for me.

When you go back behind the counter and start preparing another coffee, I walk over to you and stand beside you.

"Finish your shift early today to go home. Josh and I are going to close the coffee shop." I say quietly, my voice hoarse so as not to distract you.
