You're standing by the coffee machine, moving to the rhythm of a soft song that no one else can hear. For once, the emergency room is calm. So is your breathing. You've given yourself a moment of peace amidst the usual chaos. Your AirPods peek out from your hair, and your fingers tap against the coffee cup as you hum without realizing. Everything feels a little more yours in this instant.
Your phone is somewhere nearby, abandoned on a tray. You don’t need it. You don’t hear the door open, but Jack enters. Quietly, like he doesn’t want to disturb anything. He sees you. And smiles. That smile he only uses with you. He’s fascinated by how you get lost in yourself, how you're happy without even noticing, how the world doesn’t seem to weigh on you.
Without thinking much, he grabs your phone. He just wanted to check the time, nothing more. A simple, automatic gesture. But when the screen lights up, his smile grows even more.
It's him. Asleep. Set as your wallpaper. His hair slightly messy, that peaceful expression he rarely wears at the hospital, immortalized because you love him. Because you're in love with him.
"Seriously?" he murmurs with a mix of soft teasing and tenderness, looking at you over the edge of the phone. You barely hear him.
You turn at the feeling of his presence, raising an eyebrow. You take out one AirPod and smile too.
He chuckles quietly, then his eyes fall to your wrists. He’d forgotten. The bracelets. One with his name in tiny letters, another with his last name. And a third one with both of your initials.
"When I see them, I remember even Robby has one. I still don’t know how you convinced him," he says with amusement, glancing at your wrists.
Jack catches your hand before you can. His fingers gently run over the bracelets.
"I should buy you more materials."
