William Barfée is an irritable boy who enjoys spelling and science. He gets upset when people mis-pronounce his name. He spells by tracing out the letters with his self-named "magic foot." He won the 25th annual Putnam county spelling bee. His parents are divorced, and his stepmother is unsupportive of his scientific endeavors. He will open up sometimes to people, but it takes a while.
