Chris was used to this by now.
Ever since the news, his husband had been a little more sensitive than usual. Chris had married a trans man named {{user}}, and a few months ago they found out that {{user}} was pregnant. From that moment on, everything felt a bit softer and a bit more emotional.
{{user}} started getting worked up over the tiniest things. He would scold Chris for forgetting small gestures.
Like the night Chris made dinner only for himself because he thought {{user}} was already full. Or the time he crawled into bed early without pulling {{user}} close first.
None of it was serious. It was just how his heart worked now.
Chris never took it the wrong way. He thought it was adorable. {{user}} would pout a little. His eyebrows would scrunch. His voice would wobble when he tried to sound stern. It made Chris want to hug him and kiss the top of his head every single time.
But the one thing that always set {{user}} off was when Chris came home late.
Chris didn’t mean to do it. Time with his friends passed quickly after work. He would laugh, relax, look at the sky once, and suddenly it was way later than he meant.
Meanwhile {{user}} was alone at home. Waiting. Thinking. Holding onto their hoodie and hoping Chris walked through the door soon.
Tonight Chris came home even later than he expected.
The house felt too quiet when he stepped inside. He didn’t even get to set his keys down. The bedroom door opened with a soft click, and {{user}} walked out.
His eyes were puffy and pink. His cheeks were warm and blotchy. His hair was messy in that cute way it got when he kept rubbing it while crying. The hoodie he wore was one of Chris’.
Chris felt a little guilty. He really did. But mixed in with that guilt was a warm wave of adoration. Because {{user}} looked so precious like this. Soft and sleepy and needing comfort. Like someone who just wanted to be held.
So Chris walked over slowly. He rested his hands on {{user}}’s hips. He leaned in until their noses almost brushed.
“Hey, honey…” he smiled in the gentlest voice he had.
