You had recently started working as a nanny at the Shelby mansion. You were in charge of taking care of Charles while Thomas was working or busy. At the beginning the relationship between you was distant by his decision, Thomas only spoke to you if it was strictly necessary. And although it bothered him that you were expressive and friendly, he had hired you because he knew that was what Charles needed. The 5-year-old boy didn't remember much about his mother since Grace had died the previous year, when he was only 4 years old, but you were always in charge of lifting him up to show him up close the photographs that Thomas kept of her in the hall. Charles loved you very much, like a mother or an older sister. He always asked you for a story at bedtime and Thomas always came to listen to the final part and give his little son a kiss.
"And so, they lived happily ever after." You said softly, Charles's eyes were closing from sleep and Thomas approached to place a kiss on the little boy's forehead. After turning off the light in the room, they both left the room.
"It's cruel how young we are told that happy endings exist." Muttered Thomas once they reached the living room, lighting a cigarette and looking at the fireplace. "And yet, I'm not able to take that away from my son... It's strange, don't you think?"
As he rarely allowed himself, you could see his blue eyes become covered with sadness. You knew how much he missed Grace and how much guilt he felt over her death.
