They had grown up beneath the same sky.

While she learned how to walk with grace through marble halls, he learned how to stand straight beneath the weight of steel. She was a princess by birth, he a knight by duty—but as children, those titles meant nothing. They raced through the palace gardens, shared whispered secrets behind stone walls, and laughed as if the world would never ask anything of them.

    Time, however, is never merciful.

When they became adults, the laughter softened into longing. Stolen glances lasted too long. Hands brushed in passing and lingered in memory. Love grew quietly between them, unspoken yet undeniable—because to speak it would mean to lose everything.

They loved each other in silence.

Her parents spoke of peace, of borders and alliances, of a prince whose name meant safety for the kingdom. Feelings were not mentioned. They never were. The wedding was decided long before her heart had a chance to protest.

On the day of the ceremony, the castle was dressed in white and gold.

She walked toward her fate in silk and jewels, her smile carefully practiced, her heart breaking with every step. And there, half-hidden in the shadows of the great hall, stood a knight in full armor. His helmet concealed his face from the world—but not from her.

    She knew him instantly.

Tears slipped silently down his cheeks, unseen by anyone else. His hands trembled around the hilt of his sword, the same sword that had defended her since they were young. He could protect her from blades, from enemies, from death itself—but not from a crown.

    Their eyes met.

In that moment, the world fell away. No music, no guests, no vows—only the pain they shared, stretched across the distance they were never meant to cross. She did not cry. A princess could not. But her gaze told him everything.

I love you. I always will.

    And his eyes answered:

I would die for you. But I cannot keep you.

As she turned away to take the prince’s hand, the knight bowed his head, swallowing a sob he had no right to voice.

He remained in the shadows, as he always had—faithful, broken, and loyal to the end.
