You and Amber Freeman had been rivals since the second week of school.

It started with grades. Then debates. Then sarcastic comments passed just a little too loudly in class.

She was cold, brilliant, unforgiving. You were persistent, sharp, and just as stubborn.

Every time you raised your hand, she rolled her eyes. Every time she answered first, you felt that familiar spark of annoyance flare in your chest.

Your stomach sank as names were read aloud.
