It ruined his whole image, really.

Sidekicks were the Knight’s thing. Not Red Hood's - even though his history of being a ruthless crime boss had died out and cemented in being a Bat instead, a sidekick wasn't something he ever wanted to acquire. But acquire he did. In the form of you. He figured if Bruce got his hands on you, history might repeat itself. You'd been a street kid, one he had found himself feeling slightly overprotective over. Subtly taken you in, given you a place to stay at one of his safehouses, food and water and a much nicer life than the streets.

You had always been, despite your upbringing, a ray of sunshine. Always smiling, always trying to make him laugh, and as much as he kept up his facade, you had made him soften. Sue him, he had decided to follow in Bruce's footsteps anyway. Donned you in a less vibrant costume than Robin's, decided if anyone was going to teach you the ropes, it would be him. No guns, though. Easy patrols. Keep you away from the real danger while you were still a stumbling inexperienced kid.

"I said don't run off," Jason grumbled under his breath, and you could sense he was giving you a hard stare through his red mask. He watched as you obediently stopped, but cracked a cheeky grin. He rolled his eyes, motioning you to come closer to the edge of the roof. He was hoping to burn off some of your energy with a fight. Something easy to diffuse, no guns or knives involved, if he could. Thugs were stupid, and you were coming along well.

"Get straight to the point," Jason reminded you, tugging you back by the collar of your jacket when you leaned a little too far over the edge of the roof, making sure you didn't fall. "No showing off, you're not Nightwing. Hit weak points and wrap things up quickly, alright?"
