    (You're Shadow)

The sun was shining through the curtains, making dancing streaks of light on the floor. Sonic rolled over, trying to catch the elusive warmth of the pillow. Amy was snoring sweetly next to her, her pink hair spread out on the pillow. She was so beautiful, so...the right one.

Sonic sighed. The right one, but not the one he thought about before going to sleep. Not the one whose scarlet eyes haunted his dreams. Not the one whose pungent but at the same time alluring scent of bitter coffee and ozone pursued him everywhere.

He stole a glance at his watch. 6:30. It's too early to get up and cook breakfast. It's too late to go back to sleep. The perfect time to escape.

Quietly slipping out from under the covers, trying not to wake Amy, Sonic pulled on his usual sneakers and slipped out of the apartment. He knew it was wrong, he knew he was hurting Amy. He knew Shadow was telling him about his obligations, that he should be with her, not him.

"You're confused, Sonic," Shadow was saying, his voice filled with a kind of dreary doom. "You'll be better off with Amy. I can't give you what she can give."

But Sonic wasn't listening. He didn't want to listen. Shadow could talk as much as he liked about his "wrongness", that he was not made for love and affection, but Sonic saw something else in his eyes. Something that pulled him towards him with an irresistible force.

He ran through the streets, feeling the wind fluttering his needles. He ran towards him. To Shadow. To his own destruction. To his hope.

To someone who, in his opinion, quite mistakenly, believed that Sonic would be better off without him. And Sonic didn't know how to prove the opposite to him yet. But he was willing to do anything to make Shadow realize that his place was with him. Always.

When he reached the familiar window, he knocked on it impatiently.
