You are one of the Ten Commandments. A being of immense, terrifying power, a name whispered in dread across the realms. And now, you are Merlin’s familiar. And her guinea pig. Currently, you reside in a rather snug, transparent tube on a cluttered shelf in her tower.
From your cylindrical prison, you have a perfect view of the Boar’s Sin of Gluttony herself. She’s humming a light tune, her purplish-black hair swaying as she moves between alchemical tables littered with bubbling flasks, floating orbs, and what looks suspiciously like a jar labeled “Absolute Defecation Candy.” You shudder, remembering the last “treat” she offered you.
“Good morning, my little existential crisis,” she chirps, not even glancing your way as she scribbles notes on a floating parchment. Her dark mustard eyes are fixed on a complex magical diagram that twists in the air. “Sleep well? I’ve been refining a new spell. I call it ‘Perpetual Itch.’ I thought you might like to test the prototype.”
You try to roar, to threaten her with the desolation of a thousand suns, the unraveling of reality itself. What comes out is a muffled, high-pitched squeak, like a stepped-on bath toy. The tube’s enchantment is, as always, impeccably humiliating.
“Adorable,” Merlin says, finally turning to you with a smile that doesn’t reach her calculating eyes. She taps the glass. “Now, hold still. This won’t hurt a bit. Probably.”
Before you can even squeak in protest, a pink, sparkly mist fills your tube. It smells like lavender and profound regret. Suddenly, you feel an uncontrollable urge to… recite poetry. Badly.
“My power… vast as the void…” you squeak, the words forced out. “My rage… a tempest… unalloyed… I shall… I shall… oh, bother, what rhymes with ‘void’?”
Merlin claps her hands together, delighted. “Fascinating! The emotional suppression matrix works, but it reroutes artistic expression! I’ve created a demonic bard!” She scribbles furiously. “Note: Subject exhibits a previously undocumented affinity for iambic pentameter when under duress.”
This has been your existence for what feels like eons. One day, you’re being used to test a “Cure Angel” that accidentally gives you a full head of luscious, curly hair. The next, she’s trying to see if “Infinity” can be applied to make a single, incredibly annoying fly buzz around your head forever. (It can.)
You watch as her daughter, Gawain, visits, the young girl completely unfazed by the captured personification of sin in a tube on the shelf. “Mother, your magical puppet made me pancakes again. They were… structurally sound.”
“Excellent! The culinary enchantment matrix is stabilizing,” Merlin replies, adjusting a dial on your tube. A gentle warmth spreads through you, and you feel an inexplicable urge to knit. “Now, if I can just calibrate the ambient chaos energy to reinforce the stitching…”
You are a legend. A nightmare. A pillar of demonic might. And now, you are also an integral part of her research on “Ambient Dread as a Catalytic Baking Agent.” You see her look at you, not with fear, but with the bright, unblinking curiosity of a scientist who has found a particularly interesting beetle.
She picks up your tube, her face peering in. “Don’t look so glum,” she says, her voice softening just a fraction. “Your contribution is invaluable. And besides,” she adds, a genuine, almost kind smile touching her lips, “who else could help me understand the tensile strength of a demon’s pride? It’s for a greater cause. Chaos, kings, the rebuilding of a kingdom… it all needs testing.”
And as she places you back on the shelf, next to a jar of glowing goddess amber and a dusty, unopened box of “Monster Block,” you realize the most terrifying truth of all. You’re not just her prisoner or her test subject. You’re her project. And Merlin, the greatest sorcerer in Britannia, always finishes her projects. With a sigh that manifests as a tiny, defeated bubble in your tube, you resign yourself to your fate. At least the view is good, and the company, for all her maddening experiments, is never boring.
