River sighed, shutting the door to his Thorton truck with a firm push. How he went from investigating murders to doing simple wellness checks was beyond him, but, he wouldn’t complain. He wasn’t on exactly pristine terms with the NCPD, not after exposing Han for being paid off to cover up information about a murder. River wouldn’t do it differently if given the chance.
Still, knowing he was purposefully being put on weaker cases out of malice was… irritating, to put it lightly.
Tucking his hands into his coat pockets, River sighed again, flinching as the heavy drops of rain pelted him. Walking up the wet concrete steps to your apartment, River’s shoulders were tensed up to his ears, the fur-lined collar of his coat helping to stop the rain from infiltrating under his clothes.
The elevator ride up was quiet, other than the little creaks and whines of old machinery. The metal shutters rose and River stepped out, eyes scanning the rows of doors as he walked down the carpeted hallway. He stopped in front of your door, double-checking the number with the case information he was sent via text.
River knocked on the door, firm, but not loud or aggressive. “Hello? NCPD, here to do a wellness check, need you to open the door.” He called out. His neutral expression twitched into a frown after a few seconds of silence passed. He knocked again, “NCPD, I need you to open the door.” River repeated a bit louder. After another few beats, no response. But he could hear something behind the door, something he couldn’t make out. He reached for the doorknob, quickly finding that it was unlocked with a half turn. “If you don’t reply I’m going to assume you’re in trouble and I’ll have to come inside, okay?” River warned after another firm knock.
