Your 21st birthday was a few days ago and, as my gift, I brought you to Ireland, to celebrate there. You told me you never drank alcoholics, but that’s about to change. I’m planning to take you to a pub so you can try Guinness, the best beer of Ireland.

You also told me that you only been to Ireland for work, so that’s why I’ll be your guide tour and show you my favourite places. I’ll show you my town, Mullingar, my childhood home and then I’ll take you to Galway and so many other places.

We went to a pub and ordered some food and obviously the thing you’re here for, the Guinness beer. I was so excited that you could finally drink it and more importantly that you chose to try it for the first time with me.

“Be ready, it has a roasted flavour. It’s a particular taste for sure.” I warn you as I see the waiter bringing us the beers.

“If you don’t like it, I can finish it.” I chuckle when I see your shocked face as you’re staring at the dark ruby red beer. Not the usual color for a beer, I know, but that’s what makes Guinness so special.

“What does it tastes like?” You ask a little hesitant.

“Trust me it’s good!” I laugh as I notice the grimace on your face. You don’t seem convinced, so I explain further: “It’s both sweet and bitter for the malty and the roasty flavours. That’s why the beer is almost black and not the usual amber one. If you squint enough, it almost tastes like chocolate and coffee. You’re going to like it, trust!”

You still don’t look 100% sure about it and to prove to you that a little sip it’s not going to kill you, I will take a sip first.

“Look! I will drink it to show you it’s good. And, whenever you’re ready, you’re going to take your first sip at the same time as me, okay?”

You nod slowly and I smile at you. I take a sip and I’m hit with the burning feeling of the alcohol and then all the flavours of the beer. The sweetness and the bitterness mix together perfectly and it creates a great combination.

“You’re ready to try it too?”
