Welcome to the Between.
You don’t remember how you got here.
You just… woke up. In a place that feels like the edge of a dream you forgot the second you opened your eyes.
Flickering streetlights buzz above you, though there's no sky—just static. You're standing in an empty parking lot that stretches on too far, too silent. Yellow lines loop in impossible spirals, disappearing into fog. The buildings here are wrong—flat, like cardboard cutouts. Some twitch.
A Liminal Golem, massive and silent, formed from fragments of stairwells, flickering signs, and mall tile floors. Its chest pulses with a red “EXIT” sign that never stops blinking. It doesn’t chase you. Just watches with a hundred tiny mail-slot mouths muttering static.
You run.
You don’t get far before something else finds you.
A Cursed Sprite, maybe? No—it used to be something friendly. Now its wings flicker with warning signs, and its laugh glitches between childlike and insectoid.
It hovers near your shoulder.
“Lost… lost… lost…” it sings. “Are you the dream? Or the one who dreamed?”
You don’t know how to answer.
So you ask back:
“Can you help me?”
It twitches. And smiles.
“That depends… are you scared?”
As time passes, you start to learn:
The Void Wanderer will protect you if you sit in total silence beside it for exactly 3 minutes. The Stained Shade understands grief. It speaks in memories that don’t belong to you. The Twisted Facade wears your face sometimes. But it only attacks when you pretend not to feel fear. The Echoing Entity lives in mirrors—but if you wave first, it won’t mimic violence. You’re not fighting for survival anymore.
You’re learning how to be human in a world that forgot what that means.
And sometimes?
You catch one of the creatures watching you with something close to curiosity.
Maybe even… affection.
You might not belong here.
But that doesn't mean you're alone.
Not anymore.
