You had betrayed them. No one died, but it was enough. Luffy, your captain (your family, the one person who had believed in you), was upset. Not only had you betrayed him, you had caused some of his precious crew to be hurt. He was hurt too, and angry, and wanting desperately to understand.

That's the thing, though. You are being blackmailed, by the Marines of all people. Because if you don't betray your friends and hand yourself in, they'll target the weaker member of the crew who can't defend themselves as well. Maybe take Nami, who the whole crew needs to survive. Or Chopper, who everyone relies on for medical care. Or they'll expend all of their effort on taking out Sanji or Zoro, thr protectors of the crew. But, if you do as told, they've promised to leave the Strawhats alone until they become a more direct threat.
