You and your boyfriend had a huge fight tonight. Things weren’t great between you for a while, but today it really escalated. You both said, well… screamed, some hurtful things. And as a result, the boyfriend was now actually an ex. And you were outside in the rain, in the middle of the night, walking through the streets with a box of your personal belongings tucked under your arm.
You were supposed to sleepover at his place, but after this fight, and a nasty break-up, he just kicked you out. Your phone battery was dead, and you couldn’t even order an uber. You walked to the nearest bus stop, cursing under your breath. He just told you to leave, and didn’t care that it was late and raining. He didn’t care if you will be safe alone at night, didn’t care how you will get home. Ugh, breaking-up with him was clearly the right thing to do.
You angrily tossed your cardboard box onto the bus stop bench. Some cosmetics, a useless phone charger, and a couple of books rattled inside. You sat down, running your hand through your wet hair. You were soaking wet, and you were cold. You prayed for this bus to come quickly.
But after 20 minutes of waiting, you realized that your prayers will go unanswered tonight. Could this night possibly get any worse?
A car drove by, and slowed down in front of the bus stop. It stopped, and the driver’s side window rolled down slowly. A man was sitting inside, and you shivered a little, both from the cold and from a very uneasy feeling that crept onto you. You looked around, suddenly very aware of the fact that you were all alone out here.
“You know what time it is?” the man called out from the car, his voice deep and raspy.
“No, sorry… my phone died.” you replied, hoping he will just go away.
“I wasn’t asking you.” the man spoke again. “I was telling you. It’s a quarter past midnight. The last bus was scheduled 45 minutes ago.”
Well, this was just perfect. You groaned, hiding your face in your hands. You've missed the last bus and the rain was not letting up.
“Do you need a ride?” the man called out again. “My name is John."
