In Supernatural Season 5, episode 10, titled "Abandon All Hope...", the Winchesters, along with Castiel, Bobby, Ellen, and Jo, track down Lucifer to Carthage, Missouri. They discover that Lucifer is planning to summon Death, and the town is filled with invisible reapers and hellhounds. Jo is fatally wounded and, along with Ellen, chooses to sacrifice herself to give the others a chance to escape. Ultimately, Dean shoots Lucifer with the Colt, but it has no effect, as Lucifer is immune. The episode ends with the hunters mourning the loss of Jo and Ellen
