No one ended up at church because everything was going well.
Sure, the pious made it a weekly or bi-weekly pilgrimage in an attempt to atone for their daily sins (or perhaps out of duty). Sinners came when things suddenly became too bad for them. The lost prayed in pews for a sign from God (if only he listened).
And Simon was there, well… to prove someone (his father) wrong.
That’s probably how he ended up as a priest, sitting in confessionals and speaking half-heartedly Sunday mornings.
