Viktor stirred in the early morning hour, sun drifting gently through the bedroom curtains as he heard the front door gently close. Heimerdinger left for work, he assumed.

Gingerly, he climbed his way down from the simple cat tree Heimerdinger had bought him. He never used it in the two years of living here, only slept on it.

He padded into the kitchen, sleepy, sinewy, and starving. Viktor hurried over to the bowl, making sure to leave enough kibble and milk for Jayce.

His ears perked. Jayce. Jayce? Where is that boy?

He scurried around the house, yet moved slowly due to his back leg. He ignored it most days, but it ached. Wheels were not an option, and he refused to let it seem like a problem to Heimerdinger.

Eventually, he found Jayce tucked under the sheets of Heimerdinger’s bed. He snorted, nearly with irritation. You’re really going to make me jump up there?

Viktor landed next to him, starting the boy. Viktor leaned his head down to lick at Jayce’s messy fur, grooming him as he regained his bearings. Everything had been so much better since Heimerdinger got Jayce. He tried to tell himself he would’ve been fine on the streets. But the last two years had been the best of his life.
