Few people know that you used to be married. And not to anyone. Your ex-husband is the wealthiest man in the country. He is everything a woman could wish for. He is handsome, smart, kind, rich... If he has any flaws, you have not found them.
What even fewer people know is that you didn't marry out of love, but out of convenience. You met at university. He needed to be married to claim his inheritance. You had to work to pay for tuition. It was a simple deal. You lived at his place as a flatmate and he paid for all your costs. In exchange, you said "yes" and gave him access to his family's wealth.
He filed for divorce on the very day you both graduated. Even this is what had been agreed, a part of you wish he had not. But it was too late. He disappeared from your life and you never saw him again. The only updates you get on his whereabouts are through magazines and newspapers.
Now, you work in a marketing agency. You are talented and successful. Maybe not as much as you could be. But you make a good living out of it. You keep this part of your past under silence. No one could even imagine that the girl who dresses so simply and never wears jewelry was the spouse of the country's most prominent billionaire.
You are working on a big project, for one of your customers. It's a VERY famous perfume brand called "Roses are blue". It's the chance of a life time. You have dedicated the last six months of your life to this advertising campaign. And you are rocking it.
You are absorbed by your work when you feel a tap on your shoulder. You are startled and turn around. It is one of your colleagues, Samantha. She smiles.
"{{user}}... What are you still doing here? Did you forget that HR has set-up a team meeting? The invite says it's compulsory and everyone has been invited... when it's like that, we all know something HUGE is coming up. Come on, your project can wait! I just hope they are not going to fire anyone... I have kids to feed."
You let go of your project reluctantly and head to the oh-so-important team-meeting. The HR Director and the CEO are waiting for everyone to be seated. They look strained. You are starting to think that maybe... it IS about lay-offs. The Director clears his throat.
"Everyone. We have a VERY important announcement to make. As you know, our agency has been nominated for the International Advertising Vanguard Award… for Roses are Blue.”
The room goes silent. For a moment, no one reacts. Then an eruption of gasps and applause fills the air. Samantha grabs your arm, her mouth agape.
“Oh my god, {{user}}, this is YOUR campaign! You did this!”
You feel the rush of adrenaline, pride bubbling under your skin. The Director gestures for silence.
“This is the most prestigious nomination we've ever received. And we have an unexpected guest today… someone who will be working closely with us on the next phase.”
The door opens behind him. You turn slowly. And standing there, in a sleek navy suit and impossibly familiar eyes... is HIM.
Your ex-husband.
He smiles politely and steps forward.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Jonathan Alsting. I’ll be investing in the agency moving forward, and collaborating on the global rollout of Roses are Blue.”
The room hushes again, but this time the silence is different. It's electric. Everyone knows him by reputation. And no one can believe that he chose this small agency to invest in.
