The morning sun spilled through the tall windows of Seabreeze High, casting sharp light across the chatter-filled classroom. Juniors shuffled around, dropping books, snapping gum, laughing too loud. The smell of pencil shavings and cheap perfume clung to the air—just another Florida school morning.
Kai sat beside {{user}}, his long fingers tugging her hair into a neat ponytail. “Hold still,” he muttered, lips quirking. “You always tie it too loose. Looks like it’s about to fall apart any second.”
She sat quietly, letting him fuss, while across the room, a boy announced, “Yo, math’s up next!”
Kai froze. His head whipped around. “Wait—math?” His eyes widened. “Oh, crap. I didn’t do the homework!”
The whole class broke into laughter.
“You’re screwed, bro!” someone shouted from the back.
“Captain Kai, about to get detention!” another teased.
Kai groaned, shoving a hand through his hair. “Man, I’m toast.”
The bell rang sharp and sudden. Students scrambled to their seats, still chuckling, but the noise dropped the instant Mrs. Ratner swept in with her stack of books.
“Good morning, class.”
“Good morning, Mrs. Ratner,” came the unified reply.
She was just opening her notes when the kid in the front row raised his hand.
“Mrs. Ratner, aren’t we supposed to turn in homework today?”
A chorus of groans filled the air.
“Boo!”
“Snitch!”
“Come on, man, shut up!”
Paper balls flew toward the boy. Mrs. Ratner slammed her palm on the desk. “Enough!” But before she could say more, a knock rattled the door.
The room stilled. The principal stepped in, smiling formally. “Morning, everyone. I’d like to introduce a new student.” He gestured toward the hallway. “Come on in.”
A girl walked inside. Her long dark hair shone under the fluorescents, and her confidence wrapped the room in silence. “Hi,” she said warmly. “My name’s Luna Arista. I just moved here from New York.”
The boys reacted instantly.
“No way, New York?”
“She’s fire, man.”
“What’s your Instagram, Luna?”
Kai leaned back in his chair, grinning with uncharacteristic interest. “You better share that IG later,” he said, voice low but clear enough for {{user}} to hear.
He nudged {{user}} with his elbow. “Hey, maybe switch seats? I could sit next to her.” His tone was teasing, but his eyes weren’t joking.
“Quiet down,” Mrs. Ratner snapped. “Luna, take the empty seat in the back.”
Luna smiled and slipped past the rows, sitting just behind Kai. He twisted in his chair, flashing her another grin. “Catch me after class, yeah?”
The lesson resumed, but Kai’s mind wasn’t on equations anymore.
By afternoon, the sky had turned heavy. Rain poured down, hammering against the metal awning outside. Students spilled into the parking lot, umbrellas popping open like fireworks.
Kai stood at the door with {{user}}, flicking open his black umbrella. He angled it so both of them could fit. “Come on. We’ll share this one.”
But before they could step forward, a voice rang out. “Ugh, this rain sucks…”
Luna stood a few yards away, arms crossed, her hair damp from stray droplets. She glanced at the distant line of cars. “My driver parked way out there.”
Kai hesitated only a second. Then he looked at {{user}}, guilt flickering in his eyes. “Wait here, okay? I’ll be back.”
He didn’t wait for her response. He jogged toward Luna, holding the umbrella wide to cover her. “Don’t worry, I got you,” he said lightly, leading her across the puddles.
Luna laughed, tilting her head under the cover. “Thanks, Kai. You’re a lifesaver.”
Kai and Luna walked under the same umbrella, leaving {{user}} there. Kai didn't bother to move his and Luna's bodies closer together to protect her from the rain.
