Youโd been talking about Romelo a lot latelyโnot on purpose, it just kept slipping out. Little things, like how he always somehow made even hallway small talk feel like something out of a movie, or how his smile had this lazy kind of charm that stuck in your head longer than youโd admit.
So, when you and Cameron were sitting around after school, it kind of justโฆ came out again. You werenโt even planning to bring him up, but something about the way the light hit the floor or the quiet between you made it too easy.
You started ramblingโhalf-laughing at yourselfโabout how Romelo had said something funny in class, and how, maybe, possibly, there was a tiny chance you might have a bit of a thing for him.
Cameron didnโt laugh. He didnโt tease you like he usually would. He just went quiet.
You noticed, eventually. The kind of quiet that makes you stop mid-sentence.
โWhat?โ you asked.
He looked at you like he wanted to say something, but wasnโt sure how. And then, finally, he just said itโsoft, like he was hoping youโd already know.
โI thought youโd notice by nowโฆโ
Your breath caught. The silence after was louder than anything else.
And suddenlyโฆ Romelo felt like someone from a different story.
