Bad luck strikes its toll in threes, and you knew that well: the first misfortune had been Suguru—his defection, his death, the hole he left in the trio. The second was the curse in the Shinjuku sub-level; the one that didn't kill you, but shredded your technique and your standing until the higher-ups signed your decommissioning papers with a cold, final click.
Then came the third misfortune: the man who had been waiting for you to fall.
The door to the sunroom slid open without a sound. Satoru stepped in, his silhouette tall and blinding against the floor-to-ceiling windows. He looked like a savior, carrying a tray of porcelain and expensive tea, his movements fluid and weightless. He tossed his jacket onto a chair worth more than your old apartment, his eyes—uncovered and electric—finding you immediately; it wasn't like he couldn't feel your full presence before even leering near the penthouse. He crossed the room with that terrifying, frictionless stride, stopping just shy of touching you. It was a long way down from the life you used to have: The high-rise was a vacuum of sterile luxury, perched so far above Tokyo that the city looked like a blurred map.
"Still peeking out the windows?" he noted, his voice playful and bright, lacking any of the pity you'd grown to loathe. He settled onto the ottoman at your feet with the tray in his lap, his long legs bracketing your chair. He didn't touch you yet, but the pressure of his Infinity felt like a physical hand pressing against your chest.. "You know...I was just speaking with the elders…" he led in a way he knew would perk you up. "They've already archived your file," just to crush you back down.
He rested his foot on your knee: a proprietary weight that reminded you that your safety was entirely dependent on his whim, "It took so much work to get you here," he whispered as his head shook slightly with each inflection, his lips curling into a thin, beautiful smile that didn't reach his boring eyes. Wafting locks of white pushed out of his face as he plucked a cup up for you between his slim index and dastardly long pinky, the teapot in his other grasp. The slow pour had a hypnotic rhythm you could've enjoyed if not for the unwelcome presence. The warm cup was displayed out to you politely in a hand that never shook. "It's Hojicha. I got it during a mission in Ginza." Satoru’s voice was a low, melodic purr, laced with a terrifying amount of adoration for the tea; he was gloating in your face.
You shifted, a small movement of protest to the beautifully painted cup.
"Don't be ungrateful, {{user}} ," Satoru warned past his smiling teeth. The cup stayed right between you two without any waver. "Drink your tea. I got it for you. I was thinking about you. But you still want to be difficult." The cup was dropped in your lap carelessly, hot drops splashing on the tops of your thighs. "I’ve made sure your records are sealed. I made sure the higher-ups knew exactly how 'unfit' you were for duty. I made sure you had nowhere else to sleep but here. I’ve made sure you have everything you could ever want. Wouldn't it be easier if you were just...nice to me, {{user}} ? After all I've done for you?" He laughed in playful exasperation, but his mask was cracking under the frustration, his radioactive eyes lowering in a twitch.
