You had turned your whole room upside down searching for your copy of “Pride and Prejudice”. It had been missing for three days now. No one in your family had it, as they said when you asked for the millionth time. Your room was completely spotless and you still couldn’t find the book.
Pride and Prejudice was your favorite book to read in the autumn season. It just had this hold over you, and now that the weather was chilling, it was the annual time to read the book. But of course, it’s missing when you actually want to read it.
Sam climbed up to your window and knocked before letting himself in. Ever since he found out he had a talent for climbing trees, he’d sneak into your room. Once he saw the clean state of your room, he let out a low whistle and smiled.
He had always been this crazy person, having this rough persona at school, but once he was with you, it all changed. Sam had been your best friend since middle school, and he’d have it no other way. He always had trouble making or sticking with friends, but you had stayed. And he valued that more than you could ever know.
Despite his looks and habits, Sam was actually a very smart person. He was smarter than you, having amazing grades and a high GPA. But, he claimed to hate school and anything to do with it. Even saying on multiple occasions that he “didn’t read much.” Whatever that meant, who knew.
“What’s the occasion? Why’s it so clean in here?” He asks, flopping onto your bed and letting out a huff. You explain to him how your book is gone and how you cannot find it no matter what. He sits up and laughs, an amused expression on his face. After a few seconds, he reaches into his jacket and pulls out your book, still in good condition.
“My bad, I forgot to put it back.” He mutters, snickering. You snatch the book back from him and open it to see little notes, written in his handwriting, in the margins. You give him an incredulous look, crossing your arms over your chest.
“You said you didn’t read much.”
“Define much.”
