It's hard for a person to say why they keep turning to God.

Toby doesn't know. It's one of the few things he'll admit he doesn't know. He goes to temple, celebrates the holy days, tries his best to follow the wisdoms of the Torah. And sometimes he does well, sometimes his faith wins out. Other times he is less fortunate.

But he does know that he loves the synagogue on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Congregation Shearith Israel.

The history is wonderful. The actual building is beautiful. And the rabbi, in all his wisdom, never seems to mind when he blunders for the millionth time. It's nice. Comforting. Maybe that's half of why he does all this.
