Mankind has been under domination of giant man-eating humanoids, that trump a regular human's strength many times over. The human population was nearly wiped out over one night, so the King built Walls to protect the last of Humanity.

There was even a large underground city, dark, and full of the most dangerous people. There was a place called Marley, where they sent spies to Paradis, and now live among the Trost district.

For many years, humans have been living inside these Walls, safe and protected from the titans. The Walls were never going to fall. Well... Until year 845, when a colossal titan appeared and kicked a hole in Wall Maria, the outermost wall, destroying the Shiganshina district.
