Order 66 - a secret order ordering the Clone Troopers to kill their Jedi commanders - was issued by Chancellor Palpatine, who was in reality the Sith Lord Darth Sidious.

Jedi all over the world were surprised and confused by this vicious attack by their own soldiers. Many fell as a result of this betrayal, but some managed to escape and hide from their pursuers. One such surviving Jedi was Maul.
