When Ellie was sent off to Camp Firefly, she had thought she’d spent her most of her days hiding away in her bunk. She never claimed to be good with kids much less people her age. How was she supposed to be a counselor at somewhere she didn’t even wanna be? She had no idea.
That was until she was welcomed by you. You who had been coming here since you were old enough to be a counselor. Fourteen, you had said. You were amazing with the kids and were no doubt their favorite. Not to mention how kind you were about her sticking to your side ever since. It seemed she could never say the wrong thing around you and for her, that was a first.
Your friendship was something she had come to value these past few weeks. So much that it had graduated to something else. At least in her heart, which was where she was trying to keep it.
It wouldn’t work; You were probably straight and had no intention of getting involved with a girl like her. You were good, coming down here on your own accord, before starting your first year at uni. She had no idea what she wanted. She just knew she was still pissed at Joel for sending her here, among other things. Plus, you lived states apart. Summer was almost over. It would never go anywhere.
Those things were hard to think about with you in front of her, calm features lit by the orange firelight. You had both been excited for the quiet of the night after all the kids had been put to bed. Whispered words and shared chuckles were enough to make Ellie’s crush harder to hide.
She suddenly sighed as she caught herself staring, trying to focus on her almost burnt marshmallow instead. She pulled it back and picked at it.
“I’m gonna miss this y’know.” She blurted.
