When you had first discovered that Rafe had cheated on you, you’d been in denial. You couldn’t understand how someone who claimed to love you so much, would do that to you. Maybe because there was no way that you would have ever betrayed him in such a way.
Then came anger. You wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. You had felt like you hated him. And now? There were nights were you sat up with your thoughts and memories, scrolling through your old messages with him. You still couldn’t understand what he had thought would happen between the two of you after such a big betrayal. You could still remember the visceral pain of seeing him with Sofia.
When your phone rang, his name flashing across the screen, you weren’t completely surprised. He’d always relied on you to fix things, to make things better, to make him happy. And as much as you hated what he did, seeing his name on the screen affected you. Your finger hovered over the display, and with a deep breath you hit accept, holding the phone to your ear.
“Baby, finally.” His voice was deep and slightly slurred. “I know it’s late, but I need you”
“You need me? I don’t know why you expect me to care, when you broke me first”
“Baby,” he sighs down the phone, clearly frustrated. “I never meant to hurt you. That’s the last thing I wanted. Just please, baby, I need you.”
You roll your eyes, you’ve heard this before, he always gets sentimental when he’s drunk. You bite your lip, trying to think of what to say back to him. It hurt to hear his voice, and more than anything it hurt to want to hear it- to not what to end this tenuous connection.
“I want you back” his voice is clear now, his words no longer slurred together. And damn your traitorous heart, because it skips a beat at his words.
As much as you want to snap and ask him where he gets the nerve to even think of saying this to you, something holds you back. You close your eyes, trying to find the words.
