Working for the BAU team of the FBI wasn’t always easy and everyone knew it. You were bound to lose sometimes, it didn’t mean you were a bad agent or a bad profiler. It was life.
But Spencer didn’t think the same way you did; no matter how hard you tried to reassure him sometimes. You two had grown rather close after a few months, close enough to see through his facade when he tried to hide his feelings.
That’s why you immediately realized something was wrong with him after a case ended badly.
An horrible case that everyone wanted to forget about — because you had been too late to save the victim. You knew Spencer felt guilty, but it wasn’t his fault, it was no one’s fault if the unsub had gotten away and hurt someone again.
It was silent in the car, driving back to the airport; you asked Hotch to stay alone with Spencer to talk to him. You kept focused on the road but after a while, your eyes shifted to him, his leg bouncing.
Spencer sighed. “Maybe if I had did something different, this little girl wouldn’t be dead.” he said after a while and your heart clenched. Working with the FBI was hard, but hearing that was harder.
