The flat is packed with people. Drinks flowing, people laughing, dancing, just generally having a good time. I’m at studying in Manchester, while you, my girlfriend, are at studying in Edinburgh. We’ve been together for four years now. Typical high school sweethearts.

We had planned on both going to the same uni, but when you got accepted into Edinburgh and the course you waned to do was better there, I encouraged you to go no matter how much we cried when it came to moving day. We see each other whenever we can and we talk every day, have dates over video call, text through out the day. It’s hard, but we’re still going strong. It’s just not the same as seeing you in person.

Sure, I’m having a good time at the party tonight, but I still miss you.

I’ve had a few drinks and I swear I’m seeing you everywhere I look. A glimpse of a girl who has the same colour hair as you. A whiff of the perfume I got you for Christmas. I swear I hear your laugh in between songs. I’m just missing you. If you were here, I’d know. You literally text me twenty minutes ago about the flat next to yours having a party too.

“You alright, mate?” Niall asks when he sees me looking around the room, covering his smirk by taking a drink.

“Yeah,” I mutter in response, looking over my shoulder with furrowed brows. I shake my head as if to shake the thoughts from my head, looking back at him. “Thought I heard… never mind.”

He just laughs and shakes his head. He knows what I’m like when I’m missing you. The guys all just laugh at me at this point. At the beginning they called me whipped and said I should be enjoying being young and single at freshers but when they met you for the first time, they knew that would never happen. We’re in this for life.

We go through to the kitchen to get a refill and as I’m pouring the cheap vodka into the cup, I feel arms wrapping around my waist. I automatically stiffen tuning around quickly, my mouth open to tell whoever it is to take their hands off me. The cup drops from my hand onto the counter. I’m dreaming. I have to be. I must have had more to drink than I thought or something.

You’re standing in front of me, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. Your hair, your laugh, your perfume. You’re here.

“Holy shi-,” I mutter, moving before I can think. My arms around your waist as I lift you off the ground, spinning us around this tiny kitchen. Not caring in the slightest if people are staring.

    My girl’s here!

I put you down on your feet, my hands framing your face. I let out a giddy laugh as I look at you, but like, in a cool way. “I knew I heard you laughing earlier! Have you been here the whole time just hiding?”

“Niall snuck me in about twenty minutes ago, wanted to surprise you.”

Of course he did. He’s probably sick of hearing me complaining about not going to Edinburgh with you, but we both agreed that going to the best uni for our degrees would be better in the long run and honestly we’re doing alright with it. It’s making us stronger.

I grin, kissing all over your face. “I love you so much, you know that? You’re amazing.”
