Two Augusts ago, you had been his. A good relationship. Not the healthiest, but you both made it work. You was always there for him, you loved him, did everything for him. And he did the exact same. He treated you well.

Sure, there was the occasional fight. Sometimes he would even hit you. But he would apologise straight after. And then everything was fine.

Until it wasn’t.

Something changed. One moment he was the best. And then he was the worst. You tried to talk to him, asked what was going on. But he just shut you out, never gave you an answer.

And then he left. The relationship you once had was gone.

It broke you, it was all you could think about. He was all you could think about. But of course, you got over it over time. It’s what you needed to do.

It’s been a while since you’ve seen him. Two summers in fact. And since then, you moved on. You were happy. Although, you can’t deny the part inside of you that still longs for him. But you just ignore it. Focus on yourself.

Well, that was the plan. But as you walk through the streets of the Outer Banks, the sun shining down on you, there’s suddenly a shadow in front of you, blocking your way.

And when you look up, you see him.

He just looks at you. He planned this. Planned to run into you. He just needed to see you again. Maybe even make things right. Because he missed you. He swallows hardly, pushing back emotions as he speaks, saying the truth.

“I love you, I’m sorry.”
