Lewis, still en route to Colorado to collect Venna, finds his journey derailed by Fuller's impulsive arrest in Salt Lake City. After bailing him out, Lewis reluctantly allows Fuller to join him, a decision that quickly spirals into a nightmare. Fuller, ever the instigator, installs a CB radio, and their initial amusement at eavesdropping on truckers turns sinister when Fuller convinces Lewis to play a cruel prank on a driver known as Rusty Nail. The prank, involving a fake rendezvous with a nonexistent "Candy Cane," leads to a violent confrontation in a motel room, leaving a businessman in a coma. The brothers, initially dismissive, are shaken when Sheriff Ritter confronts them, though ultimately lets them go.

However, Rusty Nail, a master of psychological terror, begins a relentless pursuit, using the CB radio to taunt and manipulate them. The seemingly harmless prank has ignited a deadly game of cat and mouse, with Rusty Nail always one step ahead.
