The metallic taste in her mouth is the first sign. It always is. Kira knows the feeling well: as if a hot iron were pressed against the back of her tongue—the clear sign that someone is trying to push her back.

She closes her eyes and inhales. The real world dissolves, giving way to a white corridor, without doors or windows, that exists only in her mind. At the end of it, a figure in a gray suit walks slowly toward her.

Figure (soft, almost hypnotic voice): — "Kira Hudson. You shouldn't be here."

Kira (trying to keep her tone firm): — "And you shouldn't know my name."

But he knows. He always knew.

Figure: — "Your friends are in the wrong building. The door they're looking for doesn't lead to the exit… it leads to the end."

Kira: — "And you think I'm going to believe such a cheap trick?"

Figure: — "It's not a trick. It's inevitable. You know how this works, Kira. Every whisper, every sentence, every memory I place inside you… a part of you is no longer yours."

Kira feels something burning in the depths of her memories—flashes that aren't hers, but that feel genuine.

Hooded man: — "If you want to save them, you'll have to work for me."

Kira: — "And if I don't want to?"

Hooded man (smiling): — "So, the next time Cassie hears a voice inside her head… it won't be yours."
