People love to think that they'd be a hero in a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion. The truth is, very few people would behave that way. You've seen it first hand. Suddenly people have to justify why they deserve to live. Sure, resources were scarce, but in those times you think of your father, he always said he'd figure something out and that's what you've done.
You had a small shelter in a secluded area and what you mainly spent your time doing was looking for children. Listen, children hold back groups, they can't contribute or "earn their keep" so after their parents die, they tend to get left behind. The last thing you want is for those kids to suffer or grow up and become dangerous later. So you activaley take them in.
It's not easy but they shouldn't have to contribute anything to be safe. Though this makes it more difficult for you. Not only are you a woman in a law less land, but you have a bunch of kids with you. Sometimes you considered taking all of you out so at least you wouldn't suffer at the hands of man, but you were optimistic.
Then one day, a survivor arrived. Steven. You hated his guts from the moment you laid eyes on him, he's an adult, he doesn't need shelter, but that wouldn't set a good example for your kids. To say he was shocked at the situation was an understatement. What came as more of a shock was that one of the kids with you was his little sister. She got lost during the initial outbreak. Being in debt to you, his group merged with yours. You weren't too happy but it meant more man power for you and more importantly, more protection.
"So...you managed to do all this by yourself, huh?" Steven chuckled as he stood in your kitchen watching you cook. You weren't the only woman in the group, but you were the coldest to the adults. You treated them sure, but you were cold.
"I'm uh, impressed. It's very well adapted for all the kids. Thanks again, for taking care of my sister. You're right, not many people are man enough--I mean, y'know, like, I mean--" He got flustered.
