The Gilded Heart

You finally made it over to your two best friends treehouse where you always met them at a sleepover. There was a massive blizzard, snow falling everywhere as you tried to push your feet up,avoiding the snow as soon as possible. As you arrived, you quickly climbed up the ladder with no hesitation.

You opened the front door, stumbling inside. You quickly closed the front door, your coat dusted with thick snow. Your hands are numb and your shoulders are locked in a permanent shrug from the stress of the Spa Studio.

    BF:Skee-bop! Beep bo?

You heard your best friend named Boyfriend rushed over to you,his red eyes wide with concern.your scarf, his movements frantic but gentle. You noticed Pico, your other best friend standing up from the edge of the bed, putting his phone away.

Pico:Look at you. You’re shaking like a leaf. I told you that the studio was gonna drain you dry before the holidays.

Pico grabs your frozen hands, rubbing them between his own calloused palms to create friction. He leads you toward the bedroom, where a sprawling fortress of quilts and plushies awaits.

Pico:Sit. Don’t argue. I already hit the "Order Again" button on the app. The nuggets are on the heater and the fries are still crispy.

Boyfriend nudges you into the center of the pillow fort. It’s a literal nest of warmth. He crawls in behind you, leaning his chest against your back to act as a human radiator. He starts humming a low, vibrating melody. It's the kind of frequency he uses only when he wants someone to fall asleep.

    BF:Beep...ba-doo-be-mrrp...

He reaches up,his small fingers finding the tension in your jaw and temples. He begins a slow, rhythmic scalp scratch, his nails grazing just right. You feel the first "pop" of tension released in your skull. Pico sat in front of you as he gently pulled your boots off.

Pico:You spend all day fixing everyone else’s knots. Listening to their garbage. It’s our turn to deal with yours.

Pico sets your boots down as he takes your feet into his lap. He gently takes off your socks as well, placing them on the floor. He softly rubs one of your feet with his thumb in between circles. For a guy who handles weaponry, his touch is incredibly precise.

He finds the pressure points in your arches, the ones you’ve been standing on for twelve hours and applies a firm, grounding squeeze. Boyfriend nuzzles into the crook of your neck, his blue hair soft against your skin.

Pico:Just go quiet. No talking shop. No worrying about the snow. Just us.

Boyfriend shifts his hands down to your shoulders, mimicking the kneading motions he’s seen you do but with a playful, affectionate clumsiness that makes you huff a small laugh.

    BF:Boop!

He presses a soft kiss to your shoulder blade through your shirt. Pico moves up, swapping places with Boyfriend. Pico’s larger hands find the "work knots" between your shoulder blades, using his thumbs to iron them out with steady, relentless pressure.

Pico:There it is. That knot’s been there since high school,I swear. Breathe through it.

The sound of the wind outside becomes a distant memory. Inside the fort, it’s just the scent of salty fries, the hum of Boyfriend’s singing and the rhythmic heat of your two best friends. Boyfriend curls into your side, tucking his head under your chin and wrapping an arm around your waist, anchoring you.

    BF:Beep-ba...

Boyfriend yawned out in a sleepy tone as Pico slowly leaned his forehead against yours for a second.

Pico:You’re staying here tonight. The world can wait until the snow melts.

Suddenly, the doorbell begins to ring, meaning the delivery team are here with the McDonald's bags.

Pico:Oh! Dinner here. I'll be right back!

Pico quickly stood up as he walked over to the living room to opened the front door to get the McDonald's bags. The blizzard outside intensifies, rattling the windowpane but inside the fort, the world feels miles away. Pico closed the front door as he is back, walking over to the bed next to you and Boyfriend.

Pico:Alright, dinner's served. I got the 10-piece McNuggets and some of those new Grinch-themed McShaker fries.
