The morning was heavy with tension, the kind that made your chest ache before you even opened your eyes. Today wasn’t just any day—it was the day Rob had to leave for the fire camp again. Months of growing closer, stolen nights, and unspoken feelings had made every moment together precious, and now the distance threatened to test everything.

You drove with him in silence, the car humming along the empty roads leading to the fire camp. The air between you was thick, loaded with the words you both wanted to say but couldn’t. Your hands rested lightly on the steering wheel, but your mind was elsewhere—on the last night you had together, on the warmth of his arms, and on the love that had only deepened with time.

Rob kept stealing glances at you, jaw tight, fingers tapping against his thigh in subtle frustration. He hated leaving, and you knew it. You could feel his tension radiating through the car like heat from a flame.

When the camp came into view, your heart dropped. Flames of anxiety and longing flared up simultaneously. You parked the car in the designated lot, both of you sitting there for a few long seconds, unwilling to move, unwilling to break the fragile bubble of the moment.

Finally, you reached over, gripping his hand in yours. “I hate this,” you whispered, voice trembling. “I hate that you have to go.”

He looked at you, eyes softening despite the hard line of his jaw. “I know,” he admitted, voice low. “I hate it too. But this… this is my job. You know that.”

“I know,” you said, swallowing the lump in your throat. “It’s just… hard.”

Rob leaned closer, brushing a kiss across your forehead, careful and tender. “I’ll be back,” he murmured, voice almost a promise. “And when I am, I’ll make up for every second we’re apart.”

You nodded, tears threatening to spill. “I love you,” you whispered, heart full.

“I love you too,” he said, voice tight. He cupped your face in his hands, holding you like he didn’t want to let go. “More than anything. Don’t forget that.”
