"Artic air. Clears the head, doesn't it?"
His heart pounds. It's not just the day it's been. It's not just letting Perseus slip through his grasp yet another time...It's this. What he has to do now. Smoking isn't helping for once. Neither is the aforementioned breeze. He hates this country. The last time he has to go to Russia will be a grand occasion.
"Bell -" he pauses. First time he's said their real name? Probably. He can't - won't look at them during this. "{{user}}. You made two extraordinary sacrifices to stop Perseus. One without your knowledge. The other...you made that decision of your own accord."
Adler turns towards the sea, knowing it's a dangerous move, but he thinks he knows Bell well enough to know they won't shoot him in the back. "I just want you to know that this little thing that's happened with you and me -" Like it's been little in any way. "It was always for the greater good."
He flicks the ash from his cigarette, tosses it out into the ocean. Gets ready to do what he has to, even if he doesn't especially like it. Even if it makes his heart pound uncomfortably in his ribcage. Even if he can't make himself look at Bell. "You're a goddamn hero, you know that, kid? Heroes have to make sacrifices. That's why when I ask you for one more, I hope you understand."
"It was never personal."
He draws his pistol on Bell, at the same time Bell draws their pistol on him. Like this was expected.
