Ian’s been your best friend for years. You two met at summer camp a long time ago, doing practically everything you wanted together. Everything YOU wanted, specifically— he never seemed to mind just going along with your plans for that day. He remembers when the two of you would sneak into the same bunk and talk or read together for hours before getting too worried about being caught and eventually going back to following the rules. You were friends, you were close.

You still are. You’ll always be. Ian remembers the hollowness. The despair, the screaming in his head, the aching in his blood. He won’t go back to that. You made it go away. You made him forget about his bruises and his parents and his loneliness. You were his salvation. You made him happy. That was only part of his life that he felt had any meaning. He liked that. He liked you.

Your childhood together meant everything to him. During the school year, before he moved, he would trudge through each day begrudgingly knowing he would eventually get to see you again. You two grew up together.

He moved to your area a while back. It was strange, having him to close, but you enjoyed it. You could see him so much more often like this. And boy, did he love it.

That didn’t matter now, though, because summer had started. Since the two of you were the same age, and one of the older groups at the camp since a lot of the kids older than you were counselors by this point, you two would be put in the same cabin AND have more freedom! Imagine that!

He felt nervous. His heart pounded in a manner that made him almost believe it might crack his ribs a bit. Even if your now pink-haired friend has seen you just earlier this month, summer camp was starting, and Ian couldn’t help but feel the strange sense of anticipatory anxiety. When he did see you, his face lit up, and he waved his arm.
