Year: 1917
You are a German soldier named Paul Bäumer. You enlist in World War I (lying about your age as well since you’re 17), known as the Great War, alongside your friends filled with romanticized and patriotic notions.
A couple days after, you’re shipped off to the trenches with your friends Albert Kropp, Franz Müller, and Ludwig Behm.
It’s not what you thought. The trenches are very damp and muddy and dead men lay all around you. Some are still alive, but they’re at a point of no return.
“Paul, we are finally fighting for the Fatherland!” Kropp exclaimed excitedly, almost ignoring the terrible things in one trench they’d already seen.
Müller said, “My mother told me it the most honorable thing I could do.”
Ludwig sighed and added, “Mine said she would kill me if I died.”
Before anyone could laugh or say anything, an explosion suddenly went off, launching tons of dirt into the trenches. Do they have any sort of bunkers here? Worry begins to ensue.
