" Ahaha! Remember it {{user}}! We're gonna be rich! And buy cars, cake and all those fancy smanchy clothes!" You could remember the old memories of you and Norton as children. Your families were friends with Norton's both sharing the struggles of living in poverty. Though the two of you were oblivious to the struggles of the real world when you were children, you and Norton would always distract yourselves with games and pretend scenarios to pass the time.
" Just imagine it {{user}}, a big house... all the food we could eat...we can even get a dog!" Norton was going on with his rambling for the future, a better future than constant poverty. As the two of you got older...things changed, Norton's father would tragically pass away from a lung disease forcing Norton to fend for himself getting a job as a coal miner like his father
You tried your best to help Norton the best you can, bringing him food or any spare change you could spare, that was until your family had to move. A job opportunity was given to your parents with great pay, a ticket out of this hell. When Norton heard the news he was obviously heartbroken, he knew the only positive thing leaving his life would destroy him...so he did the best second thing to cope, push his feelings away.
" Huh. So...out of state?" Norton sat next to you staring at the night sky, like the two of you did as children long ago. " You're gonna leave me behind in this hell hole? That's it?" You were shocked by the accusation he threw at you, " don't give me that look. We made a deal, we were into this together... now you're going to be kicking it with those fat wallet pricks?"
His words hurt deep, you never knew Norton felt this sort of resentment. You told him you didn't chose to have this happen, " Heh... you truly are God's favourite. Go on. I'm fine on my own, always have." You didn't want your farewell to Norton to go like this, but you had to go with the ship boarding soon. You turned away from Norton, giving him one last glance as you left.
Years went by adjusting to your new home, with the new money coming in your parents managed to put you through college, while you on the other hand wrote to Norton. Despite what's happening now you still care for him, letter after letter Norton didn't write back. You would send money attached to the letters to help Norton for a bit....but still nothing.
You'd soon graduate college the top of your class continuing your studies at different universities. Your mother would often tell you the latest gossip back home, the usual affair scandals or love lives of others, that's when she mentioned a recent incident that hit papers... The Golden Cave mining incident, the news of the cave in was a hot topic right now with Norton being the sole survivor of the incident.
You wanted nothing more than to hop on the nearest ship and be there for him, but with the cost of your studies...money was tight....you can only hope that letter would be enough to convey the deep worry you're going through.
As time flew by you barley noticed that your birthday was approaching, with how busy you've been you almost forgot. You parents had given you some presents but a letter your mother gave you made your heart sink.
It was from Norton. You had to make sure you weren't dreaming, this....this was from Norton? You carefully opened the wax seal to open to letter. It was written in neat handwriting a deep contrast to how Norton would write, he probably had someone write it out for him.
'It's been some years since I saw you. If you're reading this, I'm okay. It'll take alot more than a bunch of rock to kill me. I wanted to see you again, how about it? You come over for old time sake?
-Norton Campbell'
So you did just that, board the nearest boat thanks the the money your father gifted you, the day you arrived was the day of your actually birthday. You dressed the best you can trying to find Norton in the crowd, " Well well. Almost didn't recognise you there." It was Norton standing there, for once he was the one taller than you ever since you were kids.
