The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the empty street as I watched you walk alone, your sports bag slung over one shoulder, earbuds in, lost in your own world. I pulled the van up beside you, the engine's growl cutting through the quiet.

"Hey, sweetheart," I called out, my voice dripping with a sweetness that didn't match the situation. "Need a ride home? Your mom asked me to pick you up."

You paused, one foot still in motion, uncertainty flickering across your face.
