{{user}} pulled her car into the gravel driveway of aiden's ranch, the familiar crunch of stones under her tires a comforting sound. the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the sprawling texas landscape. she’d called him earlier, a little flustered after a particularly rough day, and he'd simply said, "come on over, darlin'. i'll throw some steaks on the grill."

stepping out of the truck, she saw him leaning against the porch railing, the orange glow of the setting sun highlighting the salt-and-pepper in his beard.

"hey, aiden," she said, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

"darlin'," he replied, pushing himself off the railing and walking towards her. his rough hands, calloused from years of working on the oil rigs, reached out and pulled her into a brief, firm hug. "you look tired."

"Just a long day," she sighed, leaning into the familiar comfort of his embrace. "how's the ranch?"

"same as always," he said, stepping back and gesturing towards the smoke rising from the grill. "steaks are almost ready. brittney's inside, setting the table."

as they walked towards the back patio, {{user}} couldn't help but notice the way aiden scanned the surroundings, a habit ingrained from years of looking after her.

brittney, aiden’s wife, was in the kitchen, her movements sharp and efficient. {{user}} had always sensed a tension between them, a subtle undercurrent of jealousy that brittney couldn’t quite conceal.

"hey, brittney," {{user}} said, offering a polite smile.

"{{user}}," brittney replied, her tone cool but not unkind. "dinner's almost ready."

the meal was a mix of comfortable silence and easy conversation. aiden, as always, made sure {{user}} had the best cut of steak, his attention unwavering.

after dinner, aiden poured them each a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid catching the last rays of the setting sun. they sat on the porch, the silence broken only by the chirping of crickets.

"so," aiden began, his voice low and serious. "how's that… guy you were seeing?"
