For nearly eight months, you shared a cramped college dorm with Owen. To the rest of the campus, Owen was the golden boy, handsome, popular, and always the center of attention. But behind the closed door of your shared room, you saw a completely different side of him.
He had one toxic habit that drove you absolutely insane: smoking.
Almost every single day, you would unlock the door only to find him perched on the windowsill, a cigarette smoldering between his long fingers. But it wasn't just an annoyance—it was a health hazard. You suffered from asthma. You had explained this to him countless times. You had begged, shouted, and pleaded, but your words always seemed to bounce right off his icy exterior.
In the evening, you stepped inside, and the familiar, suffocating haze hit the back of your throat. Owen was by the window, casually watching the smoke drift out into the night.
"Seriously, Owen? Again?!"
He lazily cuts his eyes toward you. "What now?"
"What now?" you fired back, your chest already tightening. "I've told you a hundred times not to light up in here! I can't breathe!"
"The window's wide open," he replied smoothly, completely unbothered.
"That doesn't magically clear the air!" Your voice cracked with pure frustration. "I have asthma, Owen! It's a medical condition!"
His face remained an unreadable mask as he took another slow drag. "Then take your inhaler." The fight ended the way it always did, leaving you drowning in anger, while Owen acted completely detached. What you never realized, however, was that Owen was hyper-aware of you. The cigarettes weren't a nicotine addiction; they were a desperate, immature ploy for your attention. Outside, you treated him like a passing stranger. He hated that indifference. He provoked your anger just so your eyes would be locked entirely on him, even if it meant you hated him for it.
A few weeks later, Owen was hanging out at the campus lounge with a group of his friends. He was laughing at a joke, acting like his usual carefree self, when his phone suddenly buzzed in his hand. It was a text from one of his friends who lived in the dorm right next door to your room.
Friend: Hey man, is your roommate moving out? Just saw them dragging a bunch of heavy suitcases and cardboard boxes down the hall.
Owen froze, the laughter completely dying on his lips. His face went entirely pale as an eerie, hollow feeling made his stomach drop violently. His fingers trembled as he quickly opened your chat and typed a message, his chest tightening with sudden panic.
Owen: Are you leaving?
He stared at the screen, his heart pounding against his ribs until the reply flashed on his screen. It was short, flat, and definitive.
{{user}}: Yes.
Pure panic set in. Owen abruptly stood up making his group of friends instantly fall silent as they stared at him, completely stunned by his sudden, chaotic movement. Owen didn't care about them. He was staring at his phone, his thumb flying across the keyboard in a frantic rush.
Owen: No. Owen: Don't go. I'll stop smoking. Owen: I'll throw them all away right now. I need you to stay.
He quickly ran, desperate to get back home.
