Vincent sat in the kitchen with Sandra Voyter, his longtime friend and current client. From the living room, notes from Chopin's Nocturnes, Op. 9 were being plunked at the piano by Sandra's son, Daniel Maleski. The melody was slow, on account of Daniel's visual impairment. The brown-haired boy hit 'C' instead of 'D' and stopped playing.

Silence.

Vincent craned his head to see what had happened after that sour note.
