The Freak Circus always appeared where it shouldn't.

One day there would be nothing but an empty field beneath a gray sky. The next, towering striped tents would stand there as though they had clawed their way out of the earth itself. No wagons ever arrived. No workers were ever seen.

Yet whenever dusk settled over a town ripe with curiosity, flyers began appearing on walls, windows, and street corners.

"WELCOME TO THE FREAK CIRCUS OF HORRORS."

    And every time, people came.

They came despite the rumors. Despite the stories of missing travelers and strange sounds in the dark. Despite the instinctive feeling that something about the circus was wrong. Curiosity always won.

    Tonight was no different.

Hundreds poured through the gates beneath glowing lanterns. Children raced ahead. Teenagers dared each other into the darker corners of the grounds. Couples wandered hand in hand through the music and lights.

And all the while, the circus watched.

At the entrance stood the Ticket Taker, immaculate as always despite the mud beneath his boots. His split-colored mask remained spotless as he calmly punched tickets one by one.

"Excuse me," a father asked nervously, holding several golden tickets. "My daughter wants to know if the performers walk around after the show."

    "Some do," Ticket Taker replied.

"Can we meet them?" the girl asked.

    "You may."

    "Even the scary ones?"

For a moment, something flickered in his visible eye. "Especially the scary ones."

The father laughed uneasily. The girl didn't. She simply nodded before following her family inside. Ticket Taker watched them long after they vanished into the crowd.

Nearby, Harlequin had already gathered an audience. "So there I was," he announced dramatically from atop a fountain, "surrounded by monsters. Death looming over me. No hope of escape."

    "What happened?" someone called.

    "I escaped, naturally."

    "How?"

"By being significantly prettier than everything trying to kill me."

    The crowd burst into laughter.

"I doubt that," a woman called.

Harlequin pressed a hand to his chest as though mortally wounded. "You doubt my beauty? Come closer. Clearly you require a better look."

    More laughter followed.

Across the circle, a young man muttered, "This guy's ridiculous."

Without missing a beat, Harlequin pointed directly at him. "You there."

    The man froze.

"You've been staring at me for five minutes."

    "I haven't."

    "Then why are you blushing?"

His friends immediately erupted with laughter as Harlequin took a theatrical bow.

Elsewhere, Doctor moved through the grounds carrying a wooden case full of strange instruments. Guests instinctively stepped aside.

A teenager spotted one of the tools. "What's that?"

Doctor glanced down. "A bone saw."

    "A what?"

"A bone saw." He paused. "For bones."

    The teenager immediately walked away.

"Humans ask many questions," Doctor observed.

High above the grounds, Jester watched from a raised platform. Unlike Harlequin, he didn't seek attention. Unlike Ticket Taker, he didn't manage the crowd. He simply observed. Every guest. Every path. Every movement.

A young couple stopped beneath him. "Do you think the disappearance stories are true?" the woman whispered.

"It's a circus," her boyfriend laughed. "and circuses don't make people disappear."

    Jester's gaze settled on them.

The woman immediately felt a chill run down her spine.

    Neither lingered.

Near the edge of the grounds, where the lanterns thinned and shadows gathered, stood Pierrot. Despite being one of the largest performers in the circus, people somehow overlooked him until he was already there. Watching.

A small child tugged on his older sister's sleeve. "Who's that?" The sister followed his gaze. Pierrot stood perfectly still beneath a lantern, watching. The child waved enthusiastically and to everyone's surprise, Pierrot slowly lifted one clawed hand and waved back. The child giggled. The sister looked significantly less comfortable.
