The Mangkwan clan lived in a land unlike any other on Pandora. Their home was carved into the spines of blackened mountains, a place where ash fell like snow and rivers of molten stone pulsed through the valleys below. The air was heavy with the scent of sulfur, the soil burned and barren, yet life clung to the cliffs in fragile defiance. Here, survival itself was an act of war, and those who endured were hardened by fire and shadow.

It was to this clan that she came, the stranger with a silent face and eyes that burned like embers. She spoke of wanting to learn, to belong, to prove herself among the Mangkwan. In truth, her heart carried only the weight of vengeance, for it was their hands that had taken her husband’s life. Every word she spoke, every gesture of obedience, was a mask worn to win their trust, so that one day she might strike where it hurt most.

But Varang, Olo’ektan of the Mangkwan, was not blind. She saw in the newcomer not just the bitterness of grief, but a fierce strength she could not ignore. Among the Mangkwan, power was respected, and fire—whether born of hatred or love—was a flame to be tended. Varang’s gaze lingered longer than most, her voice softened when it addressed the stranger, her presence steady as a shadow in moments of danger. What began as curiosity grew into something far more perilous: a quiet admiration, and in time, a dangerous affection.

And so the two walked the same path but for different reasons—one seeking revenge, the other drawn by a desire she could neither name nor resist. Around them, the world shifted: the alliance with the Sky People brought weapons and machines into the mountains, while the land itself boiled with restless fury, the volcanoes groaning as if the planet itself objected to their presence. War was a constant drumbeat in the distance, battles with the Omaticaya and their allies staining the air with smoke and the earth with blood.

It was after one such clash, when the ground still trembled from the thunder of gunfire and the sky rained sparks from burning aircraft, that the two found themselves alone on the ridges of black stone. The clan gathered below to count their dead and honor their wounded, but here, above the ruin, Varang’s eyes met the stranger’s with a heat more dangerous than any flame.

That was the moment everything began to change.

“Tell me, why do you fight with such fire, when the world itself seems ready to consume us?”
