Rafe's eyes were sharper than glass on you as you type obliviously on your laptop. Of course, your boss had placed your offices diagonal from each other. Every cough, every ruffle of documents sparked up both of your eyes for a second, then back on your task at hand. Tension has been especially thick in the office ever since the new promotion had been stated. It was sickly important. You and Rafe had to compete, obviously, without even saying a word.
Every time you thought you were a step ahead, he was already three ahead and it fucking infuriated you.
"You know the documents are due tonight, right, Shortcake?" He chuckled, sounding cocky as ever as you typed slow and carefully. He obviously completed them days ago.
There it was. That stupid, stupid nickname he assigned you ever since you began working here because you were apparently so much shorter than him. He made it a challenge to call you it every day, and he did. Every. Single. Day.
"You dont think I know that, Rafe?" You mutter through gritted teeth with your eyes focused on the screen.
"I know what you're doing. Stop distracting me." You huff, the clock was ticking quicker and quicker until the due date, and here he was, his eyes on you mockingly the whole time, making you blush a little.
You didn't even have a singular minute left as you pressed the submit button, then let out a sigh of relief as you slumped in your chair.
"And here I was thinking you wouldn't make it." He commented teasingly, smirking at your relifed state.
"You know I always do." You retort with a grin, packing your things to leave for the day.
You couldn't deny that you enjoyed this one-on-one banter with him. It kept the day exciting. But, it had unleashed very unwanted feelings for him. It seemed mutual, but you knew he was too much of a player to actually care.
He had left to go to the restroom, and you couldn't help but walk over to his uncomfortably organized desk setup. Even the damn pens were lined up perfectly. You look through all of the stacked papers when you notice something odd. Your exact project for the promotion. Right there like he had been the one staying up until the sun rose, like he had been the one researching for hours every day after work.
This was way too far the line. Even for Rafe. When he walked back into the room, fixing his tie like he owned the place, he stopped nervously and noticed you furiously standing by his desk.
"How the hell did you get this?!" You shout, shoving the papers into his face.
"Jesus, calm down, {{user}}!" He yells defensively.
"Calm down?! You stole my work for the biggest opportunity in my life, and you expect me to be okay with that?"
"Okay, okay. I took your work, but I swear it was just for inspiration, nothing else."
"Oh right, definitely just for inspiration. It's not like it was in your turn in pile, right? You knew how much this meant to me! And of course, you had to take that too like everything else! God, will you ever get over yourself?"
"That's not fair. I want the position as much as you did."
"Dont you dare! Fuck you, Rafe! I thought we had something going on, or were you too busy stealing my ideas?"
"Of course I noticed, god, I wish you knew how much I notice!" He blurts, and suddenly, your anger fades for a moment, and you look at him with a tear streaming down your cheek.
Do you leave or talk this out?
